How to use a female urination device

It takes about fifteen seconds once you know how, and nearly every beginner mistake comes down to the same two things: position and angle.

A Pee Pocket funnel unfolded and ready to use

Before the first time: practise at home

Try it once in the shower or standing over the toilet at home. It removes all the guesswork about angle and pressure, and it means the first real use is not in an airport stall. If you are using The Pee Pocket, a 3-pack gives you one to practise with and two for your bag.

Step by step

  1. Open it. Unwrap the funnel and unfold it to its full shape. Keep the wipe and disposal bag to hand.
  2. Adjust your clothing. Unzip or lower the front of your trousers or shorts just enough to reach — you do not need to pull them down.
  3. Position it. Place the wide end so it covers the whole area from front to back, with the rim against your body. Too far forward is the most common cause of leaks.
  4. Angle the spout down and away. Stand with your feet apart and lean very slightly forward so the spout points down.
  5. Relax and go. It can feel strange to pee standing up the first time, and that can make it hard to start. Give it a moment.
  6. Finish cleanly. Keep the funnel in place until you have completely finished, then tilt it forward to drain before lifting away.
  7. Wipe and dispose. Use the wipe, put the funnel in its disposal bag, seal it, and bin it.

How to avoid leaks

Using one in different places

The steps do not change, but the situation does. In a public restroom, you stand facing the toilet and never touch the seat. On a trail, find a spot at least 200 feet from water — see pee funnels for camping. On a plane, wait for the seatbelt sign to go off — see air travel. After surgery, follow your surgical team's movement precautions — see after hip replacement.

Choosing a device

A disposable funnel like The Pee Pocket is easiest to start with, because there is nothing to clean afterwards. If you are weighing options, read the best female urination devices or disposable vs reusable pee funnels.

Questions

Is it hard to use a female urination device?

No, but the first attempt feels unfamiliar. One practice run at home is usually enough to get the position and angle right.

Do I need to take my pants down?

No. Unzipping or lowering the front of your trousers slightly is enough, which is why it works outdoors and in tight stalls.

Why does my pee funnel leak?

Usually because the funnel is too far forward or the spout is angled upward. Position the wide end further back and keep the spout pointing down.

Can I use a female urination device on my period?

Yes. It is used externally and simply directs urine away from the body. Use it as normal alongside your usual period product.

How do I dispose of The Pee Pocket?

Seal it in the disposal bag that comes with it and put it in a bin. Do not flush it.
